The story of M. J. Library is deeply connected to India’s intellectual and freedom movement. The idea of creating such a public library was inspired by none other than Mahatma Gandhi. Gandhi believed that knowledge should not be restricted to the privileged few; it should be accessible to everyone.
Before embarking on historic movements, he donated thousands of books around 7,000 to 15,000 from his personal collection to lay the foundation of this library.
This act was not just about books; it was about empowering society through education and awareness.
The dream was supported by philanthropist Rasiklal Maneklal, who funded the construction in memory of his father, Maneklal Jethabhai. Eventually, the library was inaugurated on 15 April 1938 by Vallabhbhai Patel.
Since then, the library has stood as a symbol of intellectual freedom and community learning.
Architecture: Where Tradition Meets Function
Walking towards M. J. Library is like stepping into a different era. Designed by British architect Claude Batley, the building reflects a beautiful blend of Rajputana Colonial architecture.
The structure features:
An octagonal entrance hall
A majestic dome
Intricate jalis (latticed windows)
Traditional chhajjas and brackets
These elements are not just decorative they were designed to adapt to India’s climate, keeping the interiors naturally cool and comfortable.
