About Marwari College, Bhagalpur, Bihar
What began as a visionary experiment with just a handful of students has today grown into a thriving academic community of more than 6,000 students. With over 21 departments across Commerce, Science, and Arts faculties along with technical and professional programs the college continues its remarkable journey of excellence.
The Visionary Beginning
The foundation of Marwari College was not accidental; it was the result of foresight, courage, and a deep love for education. The driving force behind its establishment was Rai Bahadur Bansidhar Dhandhania, a visionary leader who believed that Bhagalpur needed a strong center for higher learning, particularly in Commerce.
In 1941, he persuaded the Marwari Pathshala Samiti to upgrade the existing Marwari Pathshala (a high school) into a college offering Commerce education up to the Intermediate level under Patna University. Thus, the college section was separated from the school and formally named Marwari College.
At that time, many doubted the success of this ambitious initiative. Before the scheduled opening date 1st September 1941 only three students had enrolled. Critics predicted failure. Yet, Rai Bahadur remained undeterred. On the appointed day, classes commenced as planned. Remarkably, 13 additional students enrolled on the very first day, raising the total to 16. By the end of the academic session 1941,42, the number had grown to 36.
This humble yet determined beginning marked the birth of an institution that would soon reshape Commerce education in Bihar.
The Founding Academic Leadership
The early success of the college was made possible by the dedication of its founding academic team.
Bholanath Mukherjee took charge as the first Principal, providing academic direction and administrative stability. Sukdeo Jha was appointed as Head Clerk, ensuring smooth functioning of administrative processes.
Together, they worked tirelessly, often under limited resources, to establish academic standards and institutional discipline that would define the college’s future.
