Kurnool Medical College, Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh
The formation of the Andhra State in October 1953 marked a historic turning point in the administrative, cultural, and developmental journey of the region. With the creation of a new state came the responsibility of building strong public institutions that could support its people’s aspirations. Among the most urgent priorities identified by the Government of Andhra was the need to strengthen medical education and healthcare services, particularly in underserved regions such as Rayalaseema.
About Business
At the time, Rayalaseema faced significant challenges in access to quality healthcare and trained medical professionals. The region’s geographic spread, rural population, and limited infrastructure made it clear that a dedicated medical institution was not just desirable, but essential. Recognizing this pressing need, the Government of Andhra took a visionary decision to establish a medical college in Kurnool, a centrally located and historically important city in the Rayalaseema region.
Visionary Planning for Regional Healthcare
The decision to establish a medical college in Kurnool was rooted in a broader vision of equitable development. The government understood that medical colleges are not merely educational institutions; they are pillars of public service. They produce skilled doctors, support teaching hospitals, improve public health delivery, and act as centers of research and community outreach.
In this spirit, the Government of Andhra issued Government Order Ms. No. 1835, Health Department, dated 29th November 1955, formally approving the establishment of a medical college at Kurnool. This landmark decision made the proposed institution the third medical college in the state, highlighting the state’s early commitment to strengthening medical education soon after its formation.
The announcement was welcomed with optimism by the people of Rayalaseema, who saw it as a long awaited step toward improving healthcare access and creating opportunities for local students aspiring to enter the medical profession.
Overcoming Infrastructure Challenges
Like many ambitious public projects of the time, the establishment of the medical college faced practical and logistical challenges, particularly related to infrastructure development. Although plans were approved and groundwork was initiated, the construction of permanent buildings and academic facilities required time, resources, and coordination.
Rather than delaying the launch of the institution, the government chose a pragmatic and student centric approach. Understanding the importance of not losing valuable academic years, authorities decided to begin the admission process even before the completion of the college buildings.
As a result, in July 1956, the government admitted 50 medical students who were originally intended for the Kurnool Medical College. Temporary arrangements were made within Kurnool city, ensuring that teaching could commence without compromising academic standards. This decision reflected the administration’s commitment to education, flexibility in governance, and sensitivity to student aspirations.

Educational Impact and Human Capital Development
By providing medical education within the Rayalaseema region, the college opened doors of opportunity for countless students who might otherwise have been unable to pursue medical studies due to distance or financial constraints. Many graduates went on to serve in government hospitals, primary health centers, teaching institutions, and private practice often choosing to work in rural and semi urban areas.
Growth Through Commitment and Public Trust
What began as a modest initiative with temporary facilities gradually grew into a full fledged medical institution, supported by permanent infrastructure, expanded departments, and enhanced academic programs. This growth was made possible through sustained government support, dedicated faculty, and the trust placed in the institution by the public.
