The foundation of this legacy was laid by Late Pandurang Raya Bhatikar, a dedicated educationist and visionary who believed that true progress begins in the classroom. With just 14 students and an unwavering belief in the power of education, he established what was then known as Model Classes, the precursor to the present day Model English High School. These early classes were conducted in the veranda of the Shri Dattatraya Venkatesh Pai building in Margao, reflecting humble beginnings but an ambitious dream.

At a time when resources were scarce and formal infrastructure was minimal, the emphasis was firmly placed on quality teaching, moral values, and disciplined learning. This philosophy continues to guide the institution even today, making Model English High School not just a place of instruction, but a center of holistic development.

Early Growth and Official Recognition

Recognizing the importance of formal accreditation, Model Classes took a significant step forward in 1935 by registering with the then Portuguese Government. This milestone marked the institution’s transition from a small private initiative to a recognized educational establishment, capable of offering structured and standardized learning.

As student strength grew and the need for better facilities became evident, the school relocated in 1937 to a more suitable building opposite Hari Mandir in Margao. This move symbolized growth not only in physical space but also in reputation and trust within the community.

During this era, schools in Goa were required to affiliate with the Bombay University to allow their students to appear for the matriculation examination, which was the benchmark for secondary education. Achieving such affiliation was no small feat, requiring adherence to strict academic standards, qualified faculty, and consistent performance.

In 1941, Model English High School achieved this significant recognition from Bombay University, firmly establishing itself among credible educational institutions of the time.

Academic Excellence from the Very Beginning

The true test of any educational institution lies in its results, and Model English High School passed its very first test with distinction.

In 1942, the school presented its first batch of 14 students for the matriculation examination. Despite being newly recognized and operating in a challenging educational environment, the results were remarkable. Ten out of fourteen students passed, resulting in an impressive 70% success rate in the very first year.
