About Thrissur Public Library, Thrissur, Kerala
Travel back to the year 1873, a time when books were not easily accessible and reading was a privilege enjoyed by only a few. During this period, A. Sankarayya, a respected administrator and thinker, recognized the intellectual needs of the people of Thrissur. With a forward-looking mindset, he brought together a small but enthusiastic group of 21 young individuals. Their shared concern was simple yet powerful: how could they make reading materials more accessible to the general public?
At that time, printed books and periodicals were scarce and expensive, making it difficult even for affluent individuals to build personal collections. Libraries were rare, and public reading spaces were almost nonexistent in smaller towns. From this challenge emerged the idea of establishing a public reading room—an initiative that would go on to shape the region’s intellectual landscape.
The reading room was set up in a modest building at the location where St. Mary’s College stands today. Though the initial collection included only a few books and journals, it quickly became a center for knowledge seekers. Readers gathered in a quiet and focused environment, engaging with ideas and expanding their horizons.
For more than six decades, the institution continued to grow steadily, attracting more visitors and fostering a culture of reading. Despite limitations in space and infrastructure, its commitment to knowledge and community service remained unwavering. The journey of Trichur Public Library reflects resilience, vision, and the enduring power of collective effort in building a legacy of learning.
