About Smt Hansa Mehta Library, Vadodara, Gujarat
The story of Smt. Hansa Mehta Library begins in 1950, alongside the establishment of Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda. It was not born out of nothing it inherited a rich intellectual legacy. Around 25,000 books from two important state libraries the Huzur Political Office Library and the Secretariat Library formed its initial collection.
At first, the library functioned modestly within the Old Residency Office building. But even in its early days, it carried a grand vision to serve as a central hub of knowledge for the university’s diverse faculties including arts, science, commerce, and education.
A significant milestone came in 1954, when Dr. Rajendra Prasad laid the foundation stone of the present building. This moment was symbolic it marked the transformation of the library from a functional space into a prestigious academic institution.
By the year 2000, the library celebrated its Golden Jubilee, reflecting on five decades of intellectual contribution and growth.
