The idea of establishing a university in Bajali was born from the deep-rooted aspiration of the people of the greater Bajali Sub Division. For decades, they dreamt of a higher education hub that could nurture local talent without forcing students to migrate to distant cities. This cherished dream materialized on 24th June 2019, when Prof. Birinchi Kumar Das assumed office as the first Vice-Chancellor of Bhattadev University.
The birth of the University was formalized through the Bhattadev University Act, 2017, to which the Governor of Assam gave his assent on 16th October 2017. This legal recognition was not merely an administrative milestone it was the collective heartbeat of an entire community, echoing years of perseverance, faith, and aspiration.
Honoring a Legend: The Name and Its Legacy
The University takes pride in being named after Baikunthanath Bhagavat Bhattacharya, fondly remembered as Bhattadev one of the most illustrious sons of Assam. Bhattadev is celebrated as the Father of Assamese Prose, a scholar whose brilliance and devotion to knowledge continue to inspire generations.
His deep erudition in Sanskrit grammar, his scholarly contributions to Shrimadbhagavata Purana, and his extraordinary ability to blend spiritual depth with literary beauty earned him the title of Bhagavat Bhattacharya. The story of Bhattadev University begins long before 2019. Its roots lie in the legacy of Bajali College, a renowned institution with a history of more than six decades. Founded in 1955, Bajali College was not born in opulence or privilege. It rose from the soil of community effort, sacrifice, and unyielding faith in the power of education.
The people of Bajali, most of them from humble agrarian backgrounds, did something extraordinary they contributed from their own earnings, selling paddy and rice, to build a college for their children and the generations to come. It was education by the people, for the people, and of the people a rare example of collective responsibility toward progress.
At the heart of this journey stood the dynamic leadership of Kameswar Das, an exceptional scholar who topped his MSc final examination at Calcutta University with first class first honors. Under his guidance, Bajali College evolved into a beacon of quality education in Assam, particularly in science. His leadership proved that passion for knowledge, when coupled with integrity and vision, can create institutions that stand the test of time.
The Evolution of Excellence
Bajali College was not just a local college; it became a symbol of rural academic excellence. The introduction of postgraduate courses in Geography and Zoology in the 1980s was a groundbreaking moment. Notably, the Department of Geography became the second oldest postgraduate department in Assam, after Gauhati University an incredible achievement for a college outside a major city.
