The late 1940s were years of transformation. India had just achieved freedom, and with it came a surge of awareness about education as the cornerstone of nation building. In this climate of hope and responsibility, a group of visionary leaders and education enthusiasts realized the urgent need for a higher education institution in the region.

Among the key figures behind this initiative were Ajyodhya Prasad Goswami, a dynamic student leader; Sankar Chandra Baruah, a prominent freedom fighter; Golap Chandra Goswami; Dr. Promodaviram Das; Jadunath Saikia; and other dedicated personalities who believed that access to quality higher education was essential for social progress. Their collective determination transformed a dream into reality.
On 1st September 1949, Debraj Roy College officially began its journey. It was the first college in the district, which was then a subdivision of the undivided Sibsagar district of Assam. The establishment of the college was not accidental it was born out of necessity and inspired by the ideals of the national freedom movement. Education was seen as empowerment, and the college became a beacon of opportunity for generations of students.
Growth Through Academic Affiliation and Expansion
In its early years, the college was affiliated with Guwahati University, one of the premier universities of the region. This affiliation continued until 1965, during which time the college steadily built its academic reputation.
In 1965, the Government of Assam passed an act bringing several leading colleges of Upper Assam under the jurisdiction of Dibrugarh University. Debraj Roy College became one of these distinguished institutions. This transition marked a new chapter, enabling the college to expand its academic programs and strengthen its institutional framework.
Over the decades, the college evolved into a full fledged degree institution offering comprehensive programs in both Science and Humanities. With a current enrollment of around 2,700 students (excluding private and casual learners), it has become a vibrant academic community serving diverse educational aspirations.
